Reasons for the Disbandment of the Freedmen's Bureau
Although the Freedmen's Bureau was a great aid to many people who were freed after slavery ended, the organization collapsed for many different reasons. One reason was the lack of people and personnel that were available to the organization to help. The Bureau suffered from limited funds and over the years it grew increasingly difficult for the organization to pay all of its employees as well as provide financial support for all of its events and services. Another key factor was the clear opposition to the Bureau from the whites in the south. They created friction and made it almost impossible for the organization to carry out all of its initiatives. In 1872, Congress disbanded the Freedmen's Bureau because it was not fulfilling its longterm goals of ensuring a better future for the freed African Americans.
Accomplishments of the Freedmen's Bureau
Our greatest accomplishments have been in the field of education, we've built more than 1,000 black schools and spent over 400,000 dollars on institutions to train black teachers. Each major black college has received some type of funding from the bureau, we've either founded them completely or they've received aid from us. Even though we've had great accomplishments in education, we've achieved little in terms of gaining civil rights for the freed slaves. Secondly we've struggled in redistributing land to the slaves and ultimately have had to end up overseeing the sharecropping being done by a lot of freed slaves.
